Every guy's rite to get a group of his buds and spend a weekend hitting the links. Author Luke Reese does the rite one better...he gives us an inside look at his golf trips among the international classic golf links while doing business in Great Britain and Ireland.

What I enjoyed about One for the Memory Banks is every chapter had a review of the golf they played at the upper tier courses he played with his friends throughout their sales careers with Wilson. Many times I found myself stopping and saying to myself "wow, I gotta see what that place looks like.....google!....show me Royal County Down!" and then I could let myself dream a little.

Priceless little inside information stories add to the allure of this book....how North Berwick created bunkers, the heartwarming tale of Laddie Lucas, and the very cool meeting of caddie Aidan Doyle.

Author Luke Reese does a great job allowing the reader to go with him on his adventures through these great courses sharing stories, meeting nice people along the way, and making time for golf when there was no time.

..and isn't that what we all want to take away from a golf trip?

Keep it in the short-grass,

MyDailySlice

MyDailySlicehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00701473112590128473noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20584282.post-62219693110077108162020-09-19T19:06:00.003-04:002020-09-19T19:09:57.419-04:00Heritage Golf Course. If that is where you are at....then this book if for you! Phairway Phil leads your from the Dark Ages to the Age of Enlightenment by de-constructing your current thoughts of a complex golf stroke, to one of a simple...efficient "strike"....not swing.

Secondly, this book will get you in and out of your skivvies in front of a mirror so your inner self can help you visualize a new coil strike....so there's that....I mentioned it was unorthodox....but the term crazy-like-a-fox comes to mind because the author knows that to break the conventional, you have to get the reader back to the basics.

This book does, and it will allow you to experience a whole 'nother way to see your game.
My favorite was the game Clue. My favorite character: Professor Plum, favorite weapon; lead pipe, favorite scene; any of them.

Lateral Hazard, by David Saari is just such a novel. Setting; private golf club in MN; weapons; golf club, bra, facebook account; suspects...uh...everyone.

A fun read that will keep you guessing, Lateral Hazard is the 3rd book of golf-themed mysteries.
My Dad enjoys telling the story when he met Arnold Palmer.

Arnold borrowed Firestone's hangar for his Cessna Citation. When he stepped of the plane, Arnold looked at the big hangar, looked at my Dad and his radio crew, and said " this would be a good spot to put a tennis court"...Dad and his crew, not knowing of his wit, let alone the fact that Arnold was engaging them in conversation, were perplexed. Then came Arnold's big grin....and true to Arnold Palmer form, had corraled another group of regular folk into Arnie's Army. Mt Dad never held a golf club in his life, yet now at 87....still tells that story like it was yesterday.

Just before the 2017 Masters, there is a biography of Arnold Palmer in your bookstores that you should read. It is a walk down memory lane of people that have crossed his path in life, sharing stories of what Arnold meant to them in their lives.

Where the books strengths are, however, is in the great stories from the author Tom Callahan...a personal friend of Arnold Palmer, and a very good writer. The book flows from the perspective of seminal years in Palmer's life...uncovering little nuggets of "wow!-I-didn't-know-thats"....as well as some of his lessons of etiquette.

A sure-fire bet to warm the heart of anyone, you don't have to be a memeber of Arnie's Army to enjoy this book.

Bing Crosby, in his day, was more popular than Elvis or the Beatles. He is best known for his supple singing voice crooning Holiday tunes, but was an esteemed actor, and a mover and shaker in Hollywood, and an inspirational celebrity in entertaining the troops through-out the war

Nathaniel Crosby is his son from his second marriage, and was joined at the hip with his Dad in the country-club set.

Bing's greatest vice was the game of golf, he often said he only worked to support his golf habit, it was his passion, and he died in Spain doing what he loved best, golfing.

Nathaniel, was able to excel at the game to the point where he won the US Amateur, and was low amateur in the US Open in 1984.

This book is a tribute to his father, and is a loving memoir from a son that certainly was in the right place at the right time in his father's life. Nathaniel was up close and personal to his father's many friends that influenced Nathaniel in his own life. The fact that they both had a high level of interest in the game of golf, allowed Nathaniel unfettered inside-the-ropes access to Dad, that he gives his readers a members pass.

If you're in the market to find a book for Father's Day, I highly recommend picking this one.
If you are learning the game, or wanting to go back to the basics to learn the foundations of what it takes to become a truly excellent putter...then you need this book written by putt-master Ken Brown.

One Putt gets right to the point buy letting its readers know that the act of putting is not a golf swing to be taken lightly: 45% of a golf round is putting....let that sink in...or shock you...then find a quiet spot, and read this book slowly...practicing the drills, and climbing the "putting ladder".

Many awesome drills, tidbits, and gems tucked inside this easy-to-read and easy to understand 175 page book. You'll want to start at the bottom-rung, and not skip the rungs to build the correct foundation. Don't just skip to what you think you need help with. What you need help with can possibly be found by understanding the "rung" right below it.

Thanks for reading, keep it in the short-grass,

You may be interested in: why do I want to go play golf when I can't even make a 3-foot putt when it counts? Well, it's called sunk-cost...and this book offers up the why's and what-for's in this feeling that we have when we play this great game of golf, using golf as the example to understand sunk cost.

Every chapter is interesting, funny, and on topic. This is a great book to enhance your conversational golf repertoire, because it is filled with timely stories that describe the behind the scenes from a mental and habitual perspective.

So, please check this book out. I promise, it will not be a sunk-cost use of your time.

Ok, it's probably being done right now with Adderall...but I digress...

Revenge of the Golf Gods is a fictional take on this idea, when worlds collide to bring a wannabe pro golfer, and a desperate drug developer in contact with each other.

The book ambles its way to developing the main character Gordon Howard, and his sidekick caddie, whom together reach Q School. The journey that ensues is a page turner.

This is Author Howard Jahre's first book, and worthy of the bookshelf. The ending is pretty good.

It is fiction, but I'm sure that the genie in this <strike>bottle</strike> book is being played out in a non-fictional form. Heck, it's in cycling...and has permeated sports in all forms.

It is sad state of sports, and reading this book leaves one to ponder is anyone left that has a conscience... besides fictional caddies.
The place is set up for golfers...young and old. Now that I am in the family stage of my life, we exhausted all of the very awesome miniature golf courses that make up the Grand Strand. (reviews of these courses coming soon).

But back in my single days, I, and a group of avid golf buddies, hit the formal golf courses that are a very big part of Myrtle Beach's fiber. The 5 hour drive there was full of anticipation, the 5 hour trip back was full of stories of what happens in Myrtle Beach....um...gets laughed at.

That is how the book The Flem Cup is set up. It introduces you to the characters that make up this group of avid golfers from across the globe, to get together once a year to play in a bragging rights as to which side of the pond the Flem Cup stays until the next year. Through its 5 years, the Flem Cup
survived through 9/11, diagnosis of non-Hodgkin's, and marital issues.

In the book, are the stories that made up these years, what went on, and the personal journey's the author Scott Dow continues to recognize.

This book helps harken back to those days when buddies would organize golf trips for the golf, and the close friendships that these outings bring. I would recommend this book for those that haven't written their stories yet....because they are there, and like this book tells its story, you never know how they will end.
A Golf Guru!Last year, my son and I were at an event, and when we came back to the parking lot.... our car... it had a flat tire.

I immediately went into "Dad" mode...scouring the back pages of my memory to remember how to change a tire. After a half hour of pulling tire-changing tools and manuals out of the car and scattering them on the ground to make sense of it all, my son simply said..."Dad, why don't you use the tire pump in the car to pump up the tire?" Yeah,we had this air pump in the car that worked off the lighter...but my son...because he didn't know of any existing tire-changing principles...simply asked the question without regard to the way things are suppose to be done.

Short of it is, the pump worked, and we were able to get on our way and enjoyed the rest of the day.
We use a phrase from that day...SLOW DOWN....when faced with a task that seems problematic.

That is how this book hit me...You! A Golf Guru! is a great how-to-be-a-golf-buddy book. It is what you need to know BEFORE you think you need 100's of dollars in lessons. It is a simple book that shows you how to slow down...enjoy the game for what it is, and have more fun for you and your friends that you are playing with.

This is Golf's version of 'How To Win Friends and Influence People'

The book, by author Philip Rennet gives us a collection of story's and observations of how one should approach the game as your game exists now, and learn to enjoy what the game has to offer, while playing your game.

Golf is hard, but it doesn't need to be ruined by bad attitudes that alienate the group...this happens when you think you're playing below your capabilities. This book shows you how to accept your abilities, and work on your foundation of fun!

Read this book before you pay for those lessons of how to play better. Slow down and smell the roses.

Thanks for reading...keep it in the short-grass,
I have a new appreciation for the telephone.

The book is for someone who into landscape architecture, and for folks fascinated by how people interacted with each other in the early 1900's.The book follows Jone's like from the time he set eyes on the Statue of Liberty at 6, to when he was called on to develop the Jewels of Alabama which is the Robert Trent Jones Trail.

The book is full of detail of Jone's thought process as he laid out his courses from thought to paper to landscaping.

If you've ever played on a Trent Jones classic...like the Trails in Alabama ,then this would be a good book for you to read.
It is about former CEO George Bodenheimer, and how he chose his career path over a couple beers with his Dad, to become employee #130 as a mail clerk.

Back in the day...when I was in grade school I read all kinds of autobiographies, and I loved reading them, I especially enjoyed learning how they got where they are. For ESPN's Bodenheimer, it was being a driver for Dick Vitale that gave him the drive to continue plugging away at his first job out of college. How cool would it be to have Dickie V telling you your Awesome?!

There are some very good nuggets in the book...the first commercial jingle, how Boomer started with the nicknaming of sports figures, the legendary speech of Jimmy V (all royalties to the author goes to the Jimmy V Fund ), and the first meeting with Steve Jobs over the "new" ESPN phone....remember that one?!

The book is more ESPN history than a business book, but it is a very good read because who doesn't want to know how it all began at ESPN? Bodenheimer is the true insider.

Every sports station today can trace its roots to ESPN some way or another. It is truly the leader in sports.
For me, the short game is the most important foundation you can have in golf. Drive for show....putt for dough. Well, in this case it is chip for dough, and this book is critical in the learning process.

This book allows you to experience the flaws and fixes at your own pace, with illustrations of the right way and wrong way to address any "flaw" that the book describes as "fatal". So, when you get to Chapter 5, get ready for a deep dive into becoming a great chip artist.

What I really like about the book, is it moves through the learning process very politely, but then opens you up to what your mind brings to the game...or rather practice tee, to ensure that your whole body is ready to accept the new you. Chapter 8 delves into it with lessons and tips on how to take what you've learned in these pages, transfer them to an accepting mind, and with drills, successfully keys them into your inner game where they become habit.

My daughter is 7. Still in the figuring what sport she likes age. Sure we knock it around at the local driving range where the flying bugs bounce off the lights further than her tee shots, but we're going to get there.... and when she decides that this sport is what she wants to really go after, the lessons in this book will be the first that I give her.
If not, then I have great resource when I retire to golf full time!
The story takes place with the young man (Kevin) earning his summer break "keep" at a golf club that employs caddies...although his interest in doing this job is about the same as the clubs' interest in having a caddy shack...where golf carts are ready to replace this unruly band of misfits at any given notice.

What happens in the pages of this easy to read, very fine book, is a coming of age story that picks a sickly kid up from the ground, and pushes and pulls him thru adolescent...eventually freeing him of believing he has no choices.
This first novel of Rob Fisher's coincidentally puts us in that time of having a lot of first time experiences.

In his book, the golfer that takes a shine to Kevin memorably says "never leave a birdie putt short..."

The author..who had put the book unfinished down for 2 years before a friend pushed him to finish...did not leave this birdie putt short. After you read it, you'll be glad he didn't either.
Why did I review it? Because this book is about the essence of one man being in the moment in sports. That is what it is all about, right. I mean Tiger Woods transcends golf because he gave us his all and was in the moment unlike only a handful of great golfers in the past. As sports fanatics, we eat that up!

That is why I read books like this. Al Michaels is a player with his voice. Only a few people are lucky in the media business to earn chops as reputable as his. The book You Can't Make This Up delves into his beginnings as a sports beat personality that transported him to Hawaii, on his way to events in the states, that have shaped the sports world and have made him a superstar. Along the way, the book sprinkles name-dropped vignettes onto us that keep the read fast-paced and thoroughly entertaining.

Al Michaels is a lucky guy, as he so often states in his book. The kind of luck we mere mortals can feel part of with this fabulous book.

Many great stories, but one that stood out was the historic Team USA Olympic game he called. He was chosen to do the play-by-play because he was the only broadcaster at the time who had an iota of experience calling hockey games....his experience? A game...(yes 1 game) he called in 1972, the gold medal game in Japan. How did he get that gig? Because the other announcers were busy with other assignments. Divine Intervention happens in may ways...there's one you can put in your pipe and smoke!
This book is fantastic, read it enjoy.
Some are simple mulligans that we take on the golf course, but most mulligans don't come in life. So is the story revealed by the author of a very enlightened book: Church of Golf.

The main character resembles a close friend of his that got caught in the addiction spiral, and did not make it out at the other end.
The story is about a guy that had fame, lost it, then had an opportunity for a mulligan from an Aunt... if he lives on a religious communal village for 3 years...oh, that happens to be on a golf course...in Hawai'i...and after the 3 years he is bequeathed $3 million dollars.

Tap-in...right?!

Well, I'll leave you to find out what happens in this very engaging book that is light, yet allows you to think about the main character Donald, and take sides with him on deciding whether the grass is really greener over there

The real mulligan happens in the Postscript when the author reveals how he lost his friend, and decided to write this story, and model character Donald after him.
In doing so, the author Spencer Stephens got his mulligan in being able to think of his real friend Donald in a better place than where he ended.
Written in the 60's, this Irish columnist for the London Times has a biting wit that takes the stuffinest out of golf.

This tongue-and-cheek look at what one needs to do to become a "Scratchman" is a very funny read, that suggests that golf for amateurs across the pond has the same satirical wit as it does in the States.

Chapter 6 is alone worth the read as it describes of how one must fake-it-to-make-it-mentality in golf...and realizing that not much has changed in today's terms.
We are a crowdfunding platform that specifically caters to funding the careers of aspiring professional golfers. Currently, we have 3 professionals with campaigns: Charlie Harrison, Christian Heavens, and Natalie Sheary. Harrison and Heavens are both current contestants on the Big Break Myrtle Beach and Sheary is an LPGA Tour Rookie, who was the ACC Individual Champion and ACC Player of the Year in 2009.
In writing about Augusta National, author Chris Millard offers-up MacKenzie's Thirteen Principals of Golf Course Architecture.

As I review these principles, I realize...as will anyone fortunate enough to own this book, that The Golf Book is parallel to MacKenzie's beliefs...transitioning from golf course to book.

The Golf Book is a time-capsule of the last 20 years of golf, as documented by The Golf Channel...a crazy idea born out of an unbending belief that a singular channel of 24/7 golf-on-the-tube, had a chance in the fertile, early days of cable.

The book grazes through events that sparked heavy interest in the viewing audience, and thus defined the legacy of what is today the 100-pound gorilla of golf-viewing.

The gem of this book...to me, is the pages dedicated to golf courses, and the architects who sculpted these masterpieces of today...and tomorrow. Page-turning scenes of the most beautiful courses come alive and spur an inner desire to place each nugget in my bucket list.

Treat yourself to a walk down memory lane, and relive what has been a memorable 20 years of Golf Channel coverage.

As I read #12 of the Principles list: "There should be sufficient number of heroic carries"...I realize this book is filled with hero's that were carried by a heroic network.

Keep it in the short-grass,
Why
You Should Golf in Ohio

Ohio
is a state known for many things – the very first professional
baseball team in the Cincinnati Reds, producing eight US presidents
(more than any other state), and having a university that dominates
in many collegiate sports. It is also known for its temperate weather
and its golf; with 44,828 square miles of land, there’s plenty of
golf courses in Ohio on which to tee off.

Golf
is a highly popular pastime in the Buckeye State. This can often be
seen in the many Ohio golf tournaments that take place as well as the
variety of the local courses. Ohio offers both upscale options for
the seasoned pro as well as laidback possibilities for the golfing
novice. Muirfield Village, for instance, is a signature Jack Nicklaus
course that is mirrored after Muirfield, Scotland. This is one of the
golf courses in Ohio that caters to those highly serious about their
game. Maplecrest Golf Course, on the other hand, offers a more casual
atmosphere. And, of course, there are golf clubs that offer
something for players of all levels and attitudes.

Golf Club is
one of these clubs: it is the ultimate of all golf courses in Ohio.
Not only does it offer the best golf in Ohio, but it also offers a
bucketful of amenities. From the restaurant (The
Overlook)
to the clubhouse, the practice facility to the staff’s willingness
to help coordinate overnight accommodations, this is one of the few
golf courses in Ohio that offers the complete package. Longaberger is
also known for its special events – it’s home to many of the golf
tournaments in Ohio that occur each year and offers members of the
public the opportunity to have their wedding at a golf course –
that scenery makes for amazing photographs. As a golf course,
Longaberger offers a unique experience in fact, the course has many
accolades to back up this claim: it was rated the number one public
course in Ohio by Golfweek magazine

famous golf architect Arthur Hills and features a majestic mix of
beautiful scenery, 340 acres of rolling terrain, and parkland-style
play. Centrally located only 40 miles from downtown Columbus,
Nashport is the go-to place for players who are serious about having
a nine iron experience that’s truly a ten.

To Do After Experiencing the Best Golf in Ohio?

is know all around the States to have the best golf in Ohio. The
course is huge, beautifully maintained and famously scenic. However,
after a long day golfing, there are many other places to visit for a
full experience of Nashport, Ohio. Nature preserves, walking trails,
horse riding and the worlds largest basket are all waiting to be
enjoyed by tired sportsmen.

Gorge State Nature Preserve

This
gorgeous nature preserve is situated a fourteen minutes drive from
the Golf course entrance. The main feature is a four mile gorge cut
through the famous Black
Hand sandstone formation by the Licking River.
The calm waters are perfect for a canoeing excursion. Don't worry if
you didn't bring your own canoes, there are well priced canoes for
rent close to the parking lot.

If
you prefer land to water, and enjoy the lush scenery at Longaberger
Golf Club, there is a biking trail that rides through the forests.
The plant life is rich and the path is sheltered by families of Oaks,
Hickories, Virginia Pines and Mountain Laurels. On the northern
exposures grow Yellow Birch, Cherry Birch and Eastern Hemlock
colonies. In the spring it becomes an excellent site for those who
love wildflowers.

Just
eighteen minutes from the golf course lies an equestrian center. If
golf carts and other form of non pedestrian travel are your style,
try a lesson in horse riding. The Licking County Equestrian Center is
a small farm surrounded on all sides by flat grasslands, and beyond
them lush forested hills.

Are
you already an avid horseman? Then bring your own horses and stable
them for a negligible fee. The Nashport roads and countryside are
famously horse friendly.

you are looking for a place to bed down and relax, Dillon State Park
is the place to stop. A sixteen-minute drive from the Longaberger
Golf Club, it offers clean facilities, a camp store and a place to do
your laundry. Free Internet is available around the camp store for
those who need it.

Activities
are offered. Great fishing, free movie nights, stargazing sights with
telescopes and a giant hill which gathers snow in the winter. Down
this hill on homemade sleds fly the local children. Before the
winter, however, are the fall leaves which rest throughout the wooded
area and even onto the beach to serene effect.

begins. Starting in the woods and winding its way through Amish
country, the untouched path offers the most serene route back into
town. The trail begins to track the Ohio Central Railroad and finds
its way back into town where you will catch a glimpse of the world’s
largest basket.

and gave his name to so many attractions, up to and including the
It's about a group of guys that have annual golf-a-pallooza of their own kind....the type of event that hundreds of males try to get hall passes for every year.

Inside the read there are mash-ups of events you would see during your fraternity days on a golf course....did I mention only guys should read this....guys that are interested in reading about others' escapades during a golf outing.

There are clever golf games to try though, with instructions on how to play....but will assuradly get forgotten if your group drinks as much as this foursome.

So,this is not your mama's book on golf....unless you wallow in the enjoyment of the extremes of bad behavior.

Thank you for the read Harry...I think.
