Online games revisited

In an earlier post, I postulated on the coming of virtual golf.

It's here. To get a sneek-peek at the future...click here.

The World Golf Tour offers a virtual golf experience for all adults of every swing-plane.

The capitalists behind the World Golf Tour pick a golf course (the demo on the site is the Bali Hai golf club in Las Vegas), and submit it to six months of poking and prodding that would make the gopher in Caddyshack proud. Using camera-strapped helicopter drones to scan every blade of froghair...they bring the data back to their workshop which gets rendered, mashed, mixed, and wow-ed...to bring an incredibly immersing experience...even down to the chirping birds.

There are over 100,000 hackers in this uber-golf/social site, and growing. Monthly prizes enhance the user experience...and addiction.

Please remember...however good you may become at virtual golf, don't give up your day job.

...these golf avatars haven't made any real money...yet.

Thanks for reading. Keep it in the short-grass,

Since always gambling has not been looked upon kindly, whether it is blackjack or poker. However with the advent of online casino and the success of national lottery, all has changed now. More people are participating in various online lottery schemes.

If you win...should you be clean-shaven?

It's good to be a golf-fan...that shaves.

Gillette...maker of the Gillette Fusion Razor has the latest entrant of what is a killer sweepstakes!
I'm sure you've seen the Gillette Champion's commercial's on TV featuring Tiger Woods, Roger Federer and Theirry Henry...well, now these well-shaven boys are part of the razors' online push with interviews (scroll to the bottom of my site to see Tigers' interview), downloads, and more.

The sweepstakes ends February 29th 2008. Grand prize is (and this is from the contest rules section): a 3-day/2-night trip for 2 to a sponsor-specified location (within the contiguous 48 United States) for a golf lesson with legendary golf coach, Hank Haney. Prize includes round-trip coach air transportation for winner and guest from major airport nearest winner’s home, hotel accommodations (one room, double occupancy), airport and hotel room taxes, a $300 stipend towards ground transportation, and 1 golf lesson with Hank Haney (subject to his availability).

If you don't win the big one...there are 2,357 instant win prizes so you might get lucky.

While you're on the site, you might check out the how-to's on shaving. Tiger says the #1 rule is to soak...

...but is he talking about shaving or Woody Austin?

Good luck!

World of...MiniGolf?

Last week's news of Vivendi and ActiVision doing the corporate version of a mash-up, signifies the beginning of a new video game era.

I think it's all because of the Wii platform bringing the social aspect into the game, and thanks to creative uses of plug-ins..here's what I see:

ActiVision...with its strong Guitar Hero franchise, has taken the reins and solidified the Wii platform as the real social platform.

Enter World of Warcraft (WoW)...Vivendi's blockbuster game in a virtual world...they have the subscription model figured out as to how to make money with the social Internet.

Now...let's mash the social platform with Internet 2.0, and add a golf club...

...actually...a putter...

Back in the pages of the Vivendi games website there is an online game called 3D Ultra Mini-Golf

This game is in its infancy...but with the Vivendi/ActiVision mash-up (to be called ActiVision/Blizzard) I see this being developed for the Wii platform, and used as an online social/virtual site the way WoW is currently played. I see the (virtual) putter being the Wii stick, and a multitude of players competing for local-state-national mini-golf championships. The possibilities (as with WoW and Guitar Hero) are endless...but in golf video games I see less of someone trying to be Tiger Woods...and more like trying to be "personified" with their own qualities...or lack there of.

Of course, that's just one 45 year olds point of view....my 4 year old and his/her peers will someday undoubtedly push the video game envelope to area I cannot even dream of.

...not even Lasik-vision will be able to see it.

Finding good baseball bats and basketball shoes is almost as hard as looking for the perfect golf shoes or golf clubs. There is no such thing as perfect golf equipment. Your golf vacations can be fun without the perfect equipment too.

"That's what I'm talkin' about!"

Golf enthusiasts looking for expert advice on improving their game need to check this out. Golf Tips ( www.golftipswithjoe.tv) debuts as a virtual driving range, offering viewers direct access to the best golf techniques available, delivered on demand over the Internet.

Golf Tips is one of several new programs being introduced by ON Networks, Inc.

Hosted by Joe Beck, a seasoned PGA professional with 20 years in the game. The show provides informed instruction designed to appeal to abroad range of golfers.

Beck tackles a different technique in 3-4 minute episodes, breaking it down into basic steps which he walks his viewers through...such as driving, putting, or escaping a bunker. This week's episode, titled, "Chipping, the Bump-and-Run", features Beck demonstrating how to take control of your chipping off the green. Each episode is packed with awesome camera angles that give you different views of the shot, is fast-moving, and sure to keep your attention...especially the "Circle of Friends" putting episode!

Unfortunately, the only thing I have circling when I'm on the green are sharks. Maybe watching these videos before I play will help my wallet stay in my back pocket!

Favor requested

I've been blogging for over a year. Some days, when I can't think of what to write...it's like work, and I've vowed never to let this feel like work because the quality drops off, and that's not fair to me or you, the reader.

So I wait for inspiration before I write, that keeps it fresh for everybody. Heather at WorldGolf.com has assisted me in finding inspiration through her annual contest.

Some of you (mainly the golf blogger-buddies) know of Blogger Survivor, for those of you that don't, it is a contest held every year by Heather over at http://www.worldgolf.com/ in which she sends us bloggers a secret word to use in a post. Voting is done by the contestants and their readers to determine who fit the word best in their post.

Here's an example of mine that...to this day...has garnered the most hits of any post I've written...I guess I'd consider it a classic! The secret word was speculum.

Anyways...to my favor...her website is holding a readership survey/giveaway. Click this link to get to the survey and, if your lucky, you might just win a set of Ping clubs and bag!

Good luck, and thanks for reading! By-the-way, another inspiration for me is the amount of emails/comments/hits I get on a daily basis. That tells me ya'll are plugged in to what I'm writing...and it really fires me up!

Thanks!

A Year Behind the Scenes of the PGA Tour

So begins the subtitle to the latest golf-read to hit the bookshelves.

The Scorecard Always Lies- written by Chris Lewis, forecaddies its readers through the 2006 PGA Tour season.

Written in a similar-tone to the venerable tome A Good Walk Spoiled, Chris Lewis seamlessly blends the season into 14 don't-bother-me-son,-can't-you-see-I'm-reading-here chapters that encompass everything you didn't know-but wanted too, about the golfers that comprise the PGA Tour.

There is cart-path cred to backup Chris Lewis, as he has been covering golf for over 10 years, and now contributes the majority of his work for Sports illustrated.

The Scorecard Always Lies hurries the reader past all the stats and final round numbers...shuffles you past the brightly lit pressroom of sterile soundbites...and puts you right next to a fly.

That's right...a fly on the wall, as you are given an exclusive behind-the-ropes- look (with pictures!) at some of the Tours best-of's in 2006.

Thanks to the good folks at Simon & Schuster for the opportunity to read such a fantastic biography of one year in the history of The Tour. The timing to read it was fantastic, as I finished the book in my wife's room...delivery room that is...

Being just like a fly on the wall. :-)

Phil's got a contest!

Hey! If you'd like the chance to show off your putting skills and score a sweet putter, then click on over to Odyssey's latest promo, and check if this promotion will be held at a golf course near you.

Phil's Drill Drain-'em-all Promotion will give you the chance to sink 10 putts in a row. If you do-you'll get the new Marxman Mallet. Sink 8-10 and be entered into a grand prize drawing for a Dave Pelz Scoring Game School.

The contest runs from April 13-May 31, and is part the Odyssey Day Demo.

Let me know if you win! The way I've been putting lately...I could use a new putter (yeah, that's the ticket...it's the putters' fault.)

My new bag tag

In 1999 I met Mike Last. He was hawking free ball markers and divot repair tools, on a tee box sponsored by his dot-com company LMTT (Last Minute Tee Times) at a local golf tournament I was playing.

Like all dot-com founders back in the hey-day...he was high on enthusiasm and low on cash, but every golf course was his billboard, and he was there to spread his gospel...and I heard it, and signed up.
He had this idea to give golfers (in Atlanta at the time) the ability to find a tee time at the last minute and pay less than full boat to play...both helping the course to fill an open slot, and to help the golfer by giving him great deal. It was good for me (a frugal Clark Howard disciple), as I was playing fantastic courses at half-price, whilst enjoying the fraternity of newly minted LMTT members that would gather for LMTT-sponsored events in the area.
A lot has happened since then.
I recently received an award (the bag tag and VIP extension) from LMTT (now www.LastMinuteGolfer.com), which thanked me for being one of their most active members. Mike and his crew have done an outstanding job of building communities of golfers not only here where LMTT was started...but all over the country...they just signed up their 325,000th member!
You can sign up (it's free) by clicking the LastMinuteGolfer.com button on my blog. You'll then have access to your area courses that offer last minute tee times at deep discounts. Plus, when you sign up you'll get a $10 bonus just for being a friend of MyDailySlice.
Ya know, I still use that ball marker and divot tool. Thanks Mike.

I {couldn't} wear my sunglasses at night

All apologies to Corey Hart for that classic song in '83 that defined my "age of defiance": moving out, living on the beach, selling stocks and making money...yeah, life was good.

Fast forward to 1997...I've got more gray hair than the backside of a silverback gorilla...more wrinkles than a Danielle Steele novel...and I'm far-sighted.

The first time I realized that my eyes weren't as good as when I was 21, is when I moved to a new city and kept missing the exits..."dude, I told you the Peachtree exit...why did you exit at Macadanian Nut Street?"

So I bought some glasses...and some prescription sunglasses.

For those of you who wear contacts, and can wear those cool Cool Ray's...well "la-dee-da" to you, and don't read any further.
For those of you that are stuck with prescription sunglasses, or just don't like contacts...read on.

The first pair I bought looked like a solar shield wrapped over racquetball-sport glasses. You know, the kind that Borat could have gotten laughs with in his movie...the kind you'd wear if you wanted no more dates.

So I got married...(honey, I joke!).

Then the eyeglass industry changed, and I got the Oakley M-frames with the optical lens inserted into the shield. It was a major improvement in eyewear...they were much more portable, and indestructible.
They still lacked the high fashion though. An early sign of this was when my car was broken into, and they took everything (including my Barry Manilow tapes) and left these glasses.

Fast forward to 2007...I have seen the light...and I want to tell you about these shades.

The new Nike Vision shades.

For us mortal souls that wear prescription sunglasses...these glasses are Heaven.
Nike utilizes what they call Max Rx Optics Technology, which is the ability to use the whole glass as the optical lens. What this means (eg: for us golfers) is if I'm lining up a putt, I don't have to look through an insert to get the correct line, and my peripheral vision is 20/20.
I also opted for the polarization of these shades, and I can now see better definition in contrasting light. Which means I can stretch those last few holes out when the sun is going down, and still read a putt.

You should hear me belt-out Corey's song now...and man, do I look cool.

Ticketreserve.com

Flipping through my recent Newsweek magazine yielded me a great new website I want to tell you about. It's not golf-related...yet...I think though it will be, as it will revolutionize high-demand events.
The website is www.ticketreserve.com. The site allows you to buy options on your favorite team, with the hopes of either reselling the option at a higher price, or buying them at face value.
Let me give you an example: Next month is the holy grail for college basketball- the NCAA Final Four tournament. You can go to www.ticketreserve.com, and right now buy an option on your favorite team, with the guarantee you will be able to buy the real tickets for face value if your team makes it to the Final Four. The higher your team advances, the more your option is worth. If your team makes it to the Final Four, you can purchase these tickets (March 31st) for the event at face value. If your team doesn't make it...well, you've just been given a lesson in Options 101.

If you extrapolate this concept, you can see where this will work for all the golf Majors...even the FedEx Cup. You pick your golfer from the field, if he makes it to the third round, you can buy the ticket at face value.
This is the most revolutionary ticket concept I've seen in a long time, and I believe www.ticketreserve.com will be huge. A couple factors will contribute to this: the ability to seamlessly "flip" options, and the ultimate-being able to make a prediction...its an inherent trait in all of us: the ability to pontificate your prognostication.

I'll tell you my pick after I buy my option!

Pre order Masters memorabilia

I recently got an email from a trusted vendor who sells items from the Masters golf tournament. Outside of vendors like this, your only hope to get Masters items is to be at the tournament...as Augusta National does not license or sell there products outside of their pearly gates.

I collect the limited edition lapel pins. Every year, the pins feature a hole on the course, and the tree specimen of that particular hole. When I get my 2007 pin, I will post you my updated collection, as they are VERY cool.

Here is the email I received:

Masters Mail Order is now taking merchandise pre-orders for the 2007 Masters in Augusta, Georgia

Check out our new website! http://www.mmogolf.com
Get your orders in early to take advantage of the discounted pre-order prices! Pre-ordered items will begin shipping on April 2, 2007
Orders will be taken online only from February 14th through February 28th.
In addition to online orders, we will begin taking orders by phone at (888) 660-7910 starting March 1st.

I have no affiliation with them...only that I've used their service for over 4 years, and I give them two thumbs up!

On being "hit with the ugly stick"

Have you ever heard that phrase? The first time for me was in high school. My buddy Frankie and I were on a double-date. He had met this girl in Stats 101 that he desperately wanted to take to the school sock-hop....deal was, she had to bring her sister.
That's where I came in...yeah, it was a blind date set-up.
That Monday, back at school, I heard two new phrases that would forever be used to bookend my awkward teenage social life: "You're a helluva wing man Johnnie." and: "Dude, that date you were with ...um...d'she get hit with the ugly stick?"

Fast-forward to 2007.

I just got my February Golfsmith catalog in the mail (that's right...I get it monthly...the more I buy, the more junk-mail they send me...whatta concept!). The front of the catalog says "THE MOMENT IS HERE".
I flip through the pages to find out where this moment is, and how come it's not here in these pages.

Then I read the small print: "the new technology you've been waiting for"

...wait...you don't mean...oh man, they do.

Taking notice, I open to the first page again. Immediately I'm assaulted by these two hulking club heads that resemble boxing gloves Wham! Wham!
Trembling now, I flip to the Hybrid section. My son says to me: "daddy, those look like the metal spoons I baked in the oven yesterday."
I said...yes, that's right son, clubmakers use the same process and charge hundreds of dollars for them....wait...you did what?!"
My son's eyes get big, and his jaw hits the floor. Clank!

Thinking this visual abuse is over, I turn the catalog over to the back cover...

OOOmplaek...uhh!

Sorry...I had to run to the little boys room...okay...lemme look again...yunmfhgla!

CAN SOMEONE PLEASE TELL ME WHAT THE HELL CLEVELAND GOLF IS DOING, AND WHY GOLFSMITH IS SELLING THESE THINGS?!

The headliner for the "New This Season" iron is: "Maximum Forgiveness In A Hybrid Iron Set".

I think it should read: "We at Cleveland and Golfsmith are on our knees, begging for your maximum forgiveness for you having to look at our Hi-ghly Bore-ing irons, and expecting you to pay out the wazoo for them."

Callaway FT-i, Nike SQ SUMO2, Cleveland HiBore...I'll see you on the deep-deep-discount racks at Golfsmith...by the end of this year. Not even a Harry Potter spell can save these clubs from the hallows.

Yeah, I'll still be wandering the Golfsmith aisles, cause you see...I'm a helluva wing man...

...but these clubs they are trying to sell me have been hit with the ugly stick.

Movin' on up

I'm sure a few of my loyal readers were mortified yesterday when they logged in and saw the "under construction" sign. Ok, you probably weren't too concerned..but I was!
Google is now allowing custom domains to be used in Blogger instead of the old yadayadayada.blogspot.com address.
I have a domain name www.MyDailySlice.com that I've been chompin' at the bit to use...but was too cheap (or scared) to build it out. Now Google has made it (sort-of) easy.

For those of you with a blogspot address...if you'd like to switch it to your personal domain name...now you can. Go to www.blogger.com, log in, and you'll see the instructions on how to do it. It's all done seemlessly.

For now though, I've dropped the garden-variety .blogspot.com address, and will be known exclusively as www.MyDailySlice.com!

Additions

I've recently added a couple links that I feel will make your visits to my blog additionally rewarding. The first is I've added Golf.com's Private Lessons link to the MyDailySlice links section. It directs you to a profiler questionnaire , which asks you a few "how you golf now" questions, and compiles the information to give you solutions to correct your swing mistakes.

The second is I've added another golf blog to my blogrollthat is insightful, and has great links to interesting golf-related sites. The site? GolfBlogger. Check it out!

Cleaning up the Clubhouse

I'm a self-confessed neat-freak. For me, a room that is clean and clutter-free is an oasis. This goes for whether I'm at home, a hotel...

...or on my blog.

When Blogger-Beta came out, I....being a technophobe, jumped at the opportunity of being the first to experience The Next Big Thing. Problem was, I'm a technophobe that never read The Complete Idiots Guide to Being a Technophobe, so when the bugs started cropping-up, my anxiety reached the 3-foot-putt-with-$20-on-the-line level. Luckily, Google is prepared for guys like me, and has engineers working round-the-clock de-bugging The Next Big Thing.

I'm happy to say that I found exactly 2 hours of quiet-time where I could totally immerse myself into the Blogger Beta, and re-create what I believe to be a better user-experience for my fans of MyDailySlice.

A couple features I want to point out: in my BlogRoll column, you can glide your mouse over the blog name to let you know the last date of its post.
At the bottom of my site I have an RSS feed of golf news that is updated 24/7 on my blog for your enjoyment.
Also, if you're a new reader (first-off thank-you!), I've "tagged" all my posts so you can go to my Posts by subject column and read all the posts of a subject you're interested in. This allowed me to condense my archive, but you can still read my posts chronologically if you wish from the drop-down menu.

The bottom-line is that I believe I've created a cleaner-looking site...un-cluttered, more user-friendly, and more colorful! It's still in Beta, and there are still stray bugs that come around, but the New Blogger is light-years better than the older version.

Whew! All this cleaning house has gotten me motivated.

So, excuse me while I go organize my golf bag and clean my clubs.

(continued):Good-bye lead tape

I'm a stats guy. I love perusing numbers to find glaring deficiencies or strengths, so when I kept track of my golf stats this year, the end result was to improve by letting the stats point out my strengths and weaknesses.
I kept track of G(reens)I(n)R(egulation), P(utt's), and F(airway's)H(it). FH came in as my biggest strength as I was hitting 70% of them. P was averaging 34 per round...that's ok, but when I drilled it down, I found out that close to 30% of the first putts were within 6'. Aha! Room for improvement. The glaring weakness in my game was GIR's: less than 40%. That stat has been knawing at my gut, and was my mission to improve as I walked into Golfsmith.

I have been hitting doctored-up Penick irons for over 3 years, and I wanted to see what products they had that would show me improvement. I had an old club in the trunk so they could reference it. They quickly ascertained that I should move up to a forged muscle-back iron. After hitting a few of their demo clubs, I concurred. They fitted me for a new set of Snake Eyes 600XC with TT Lite XL shafts and my favorite Lamkin grips.

We didn't stop there.

On to the putter. They had me hit a few putts with a mallet head as they felt it would eliminate the head-twisting that is going on with my short putts. After realizing that a heavier head did just that, they fitted me with a Snake Eyes Python Pure Balance Model I .

Being a Clubvantage and Golf Rewards member, I was able to get assembly of these clubs done at no cost, and also was able to work a great deal. Loyalty has its perks!

I picked these baby's up last night. After air-swinging them, I just can't believe the difference. The first is that I can really feel the clubhead, the second is how sweet they look at address. As for the putter, I was able to stroke a few on their artificial mat. Gone is the wobbling, and at address I have a greater reference to lining up a putt.

I now have no excuses.

My first chance to play with these puppies will be next weekend with my father-in-law (who by the way is inheriting my old Penick's).

Next weekend is when I start my stats anew. And I will also introduce a new statistic to the bunch.

SW.....

...skins won.

An expensive traffic jam

Or, my alternate title: Maybe it was the hayfever medication.

This month I had to make a trip to the local FedEx office to pick up a couple sweet tickets to the upcoming Georgia Tech/Miami football game. The game was sold out, and my father-in-law really wants to go to the game. Obviously I'm going to oblige him....in case you forgot the last sentence....he's my father-in-law.
A diehard Syracuse fan, he HATES Miami U with a passion ever since they left the big East division. Oh yeah, his Northern neighbor loves the Dolphins....all of which really pisses him off. I think it's because it never snows down there that really grinds his axe. He believes everyone should be born with a snow shovel in one hand, and a can of Vicks Vape-o-Rub in the other.

By the way, I scored these tix from my sponsor Coast to Coast Tickets , great tickets from nice people. I suggest if you're in a tight for any kind of event ticket, you should check them out.

So I'm coming back from FedEx when I get caught in this horrendous traffic jam. I quickly ascertain that I can do one of three things:
1) Sit in the traffic and mope about why I shouldn't have switched my Blogger account to the Blogger Beta version (oh, you want to post to other blogs?...oh, you want to use Picasa to download pictures?)...man, I didn't know I had it so good before I hit the submit button(or what I call the point of no return button);
2) I could mope (some more) about how my digital camera fritzed on me, and I'm sans camera for "4-6 weeks".

3) I could go to Golfsmith.

Yes, right there in between a Toy's R Us, and Best Buy, was my playground.

I fluidly dropped the car onto the berm, avoided a couple tire rims, and made the exit with nary a beep of my horn.
As for the other horns bleeping? I couldn't hear 'em.

I was going to Golfsmith.

The art of being in the zone

How many times have we heard an interview with a golfer after a profound performance say that they were in the zone? 99% of the time the athlete never credits his equipment..."well, you know Curtis, I just thought my golf bag did an outstanding job for me today...and my tees...wow! Well, you know...you saw it out there..."

No, 99% of the time it's between his ears.

Way back when, as a greenhorn investment banker, I tried anything to give me an edge...be it coffee or motivational tapes.....ah, motivational tapes. Guys like Earl Nightengale and Zig Ziglar could get in my head and head it in the right direction. All it took was one ounce of belief. Back in the day, they were my belief masters.

It's the same with my golf game. To this day my favorite golf books are The Inner Game of Golf and Golf in the Kingdom. Both books deal with existentialism. Both deal with getting outside yourself to perform better.

What is needed to improve one's golf game is to attain a state of relaxation and focus. To do that, you need to get outside yourself.

I've come across an audio program that does just that. One that My Daily Slice endorses. It's The Golf Mental Mastery Program. You can review it and purchase it from my site if you follow the Golf Mental link under the Links section on my blog.

The audio succeeds by getting the listener to relax, and focus on basic positive swing thoughts and positive swing sounds (eg: the swing; the click of a ball going in the cup), then when in a relaxed state, reinforces these mental images.

Oh, and for you multi-taskers like me: if you haven't realized this already, you can't do this driving your car.
My 3-year old can vouch for the relaxing nature of the tapes...it's one of the methods I use to help him to fall asleep, and it's the best time for me to listen to the audio.

In Golf Digest, December 2002 is an example of how ????(guess) has used hypnosis.

At age 13, ??? began mental training with Dr. Jay Brunza, a family friend and psychologist. Among the techniques Brunza used were subliminal tapes and hypnosis. The first time Jay hypnotized ???, he had him stick his arm straight out and told him that it couldn't be moved. ????'? father says. "I tried, but I couldn't pull it down." ??? says hypnosis is inherent in what I do now.

???=Tiger Woods.....any questions?
